SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA (FIBA EuroBasket 2017) - Spain star Sergio Llull suffered a serious knee injury in his team's 89-71 friendly defeat to Belgium on Wednesday night and has been lost for FIBA EuroBasket.

The 29-year-old guard, who has played for Spain's senior side every summer since 2009, tore his right ACL while facing the Belgians. The Real Madrid man will also be out of the Spanish Liga Endesa season and the start of his country's qualifying campaign for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, which tips off in November.

While at hospital, Llull tweeted: "I will return! Thanks for all the messages."

Llull, a FIBA EuroBasket champion in 2009, 2011 and 2015, is the second Spain player to go down with injury this summer. Pau Ribas, another member of the title-winning side at FIBA EuroBasket 2015, also got hurt in the preparations.

Among those offering words of encouragement to Llull was teammate Pau Gasol, the MVP of the FIBA EuroBasket two years ago in France.

"I know that you will come back stronger than ever," Gasol tweeted.
