    RUSSIA
    EUROBASKET 2009, MEN

    TEAM CHARACTERISTICS
Very big, skilled, experienced team. Guards score in transition and fill their role on offense. Ball is funneled through on most possessions. Effective defensive team due to pressure, trapping and ability to shot block. Good balance of inside and outside play on both ends.

    TRANSITION
Great passing and shooting are the trademark of this transition game. Many baskets in transition come from turnover caused by defensive pressure or blocked shots. Posts trail penetrating guards to shoot open three pointers. Once the ball is penetrated on the other end, several players are shot ready in spot up positions for open shots. A large percentage of points can come off the break.

    OFFENSIVE TENDENCIES
Skilled, versatile players allow the offense many scoring options. Set play execution and dribble penetration are keys to their ability to score. Isolation is common with an offensive possession. On ball screens result in drives to the basket, step back jump shots. Good cutting action away from the ball on post feeds. Aggressive guard play gets the ball to the paint often, creating more scoring situations.

    SET PLAYS
    1. Entry pass, post up, high post pass, post feed.
    2. Baseline screen and curl, followed by baseline screen for open three pointer.

    OB PLAYS
Several alignments are used including box and 3 across set. Once passer throws inbounds, he uses screens to get open for shot. Screeners post after screening.

    DEFENSIVE CHARACTERISTICS
Team defense is based on pressure, rotating man to man in the half court, and shot blocking ability at the rim. After made free throws, they will pick up full court. A man to man defense includes trapping the post and switching. In the full court, they use a trapping zone press that includes run and jump and backcourt trapping. At times in the half court, they will double the ball on the wing or at the point with a forward and scramble to cover up on the front line.
