LA HABANA (FIBA Americas Championship for Women) – For the third consecutive time, Cuba defeated Chile, 79-57; though the scored did get much closer, when Chile finally won the fourth quarter, although it wasn’t enough.

Let’s remember that Team Cuba started their training on January, with two daily practice sessions, first for the Pan-American Championship. As a result, they’re in their pick, and now they’re facing Team Chile, who is still looking for their peak before Valdivia.

For Chile, Valentina Aragonesse was the higher scorer in the game with 22 points, followed by Tatiana Gomez with 14. Tatiana is just getting used to coach Santander’s system due to a recent injury. The center is hoping to be at least in an 80% of her physical condition when the FIBA Americas Championship for Women begins in Valdivia, Chile.

At the contrary of the Chileans, the Cubans had a better ball distribution, with excellent game from Yaima Boulet with 18 points. Yakelin Plutin scored 14 pints. It’s obvious that the Cuban players are committed to look for high percentage shots, without dribbling too much the ball, displaying a fluent game style in the court. The story for Chile was the complete opposite, when they put the offensive responsibility on the shoulders of their two stars, Valentina and Tatiana, who were assisted by Ziomara Morrizon and Catalina Lopez, both with 8 points each.

It’s very important to mention that Chile’s game improved from quarter to quarter, coming from behind, fighting against both the Cuban centers and a temperature unusual for the Chileans at this time of the year. They didn’t win a game, but they took with them the last quarter.

Santander is satisfied with the results, because they are within what was planned concerning the technical and physical develpment for the team. “It’s obvious that nobody likes to loose, but we have to use this as a learning tool on our way to the Pre-Olympic”.
