CUIABÁ (FIBA Americas Championship for Women) – Cuba started with a statement at the FIBA Americas Championship by crushing Chile 94-60 at Aecim Tocantins Gym in Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil.
The Cubans dominated from start to finish thanks to a balanced offensive attack led by Yamara Amargo who scored 15 points. Also they took advantage of their size and strength in the paint, dominating in the rebounds 45-32.
Clenia Noblet scored 14 points, Oyanaisy Gelis 11 and Klavdia Calvo 10 to round up the Cuban attack. Cuba shot 49% from the field, making 35 shots in 71 attempts, including ten three pointers.
Cuba started the game with a 13-4 run and finished up 28-16. Amargo had 8 points and Calvo 6 for Cuba who scored consistently from short and long distance.
At halftime the lead was 41-27 for Cuba and in the third quarter they continued to extend it with baskets from three point range led by Gelis, Amargo and the bench players.
Chile had a good performance from Ziomara Morrison and Tatiana Gomez but the rest of the players didn't help on both sides of the court. Morrison finished with 21 points and Tatiana Gomez 13.
