BEIJING (NBA) - Yao Ming is a long way from getting back to his best with the Houston Rockets after missing all of last season following foot surgery.

But at least the Chinese basketball icon is playing again and on Wednesday night, it was his countrymen back in Beijing that got to watch him in compete in person.

Playing at the Wukesong Arena, where Yao thrilled the crowds while wearing his China national team shirt at the 2008 Olympics, the 7ft 5in giant played 19 minutes and had nine points and four rebounds in a 91-81 victory over New Jersey.

It’s unclear how many minutes Yao will play in each game this season.

The Rockets are being cautious with his time on the court.

"Everything is geared toward letting me hold up longer," said Yao, when asked about his limited role so far.

"Even little kids know, vegetables might not taste very good, but they're good for you and healthy - that's how it is."
