TORONTO (FIBA Americas Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Canada coach Jay Triano has found it so difficult to reduce his squad that 14 players will take part in the Tuto Marchand Cup in Puerto Rico this week.
Triano had been expected to reduce the roster after the Jack Donohue International Classic series with Jamaica to the requisite 12.
The side has lost veteran Carl English, though, with the sharpshooting guard forced to pull out of the group for personal reasons.
English, a stand-out player in Spain's Liga Endesa the past several seasons, had looked to be a sure-fire bet for the squad that will compete at the FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas, Venezuela.
"This is an unfortunate situation for Carl," said Triano.
"He has been a mainstay with the program for several years and a strong influence on the team during training camp, but we will move forward without him.
"We will miss his scoring ability, veteran leadership and international experience."
The other teams playing at the Tuto Marchand International Cup are Puerto Rico, Argentina, the Dominican Republic and Brazil.
The top four sides at the FIBA Americas Championship will punch their tickets to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.
Canada's 14-man squad for Tuto Marchand Cup: Jermaine Anderson, Joel Anthony, Junior Cadougan, Aaron Doornekamp, Brady Heslip, Cory Joseph, Devoe Joseph, Kris Joseph, Levon Kendall, Kyle Landry, Andrew Nicholson, Andrew Rautins, Jevohn Shepherd and Tristan Thompson.
