BARUERI (2009 FIBA Americas Championship for Women) - Brazil added another win prior to the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship for Women after defeating Argentina 77-71 in overtime. Regulation ended tied at 66.
The star was center Franciele Nascimento who led Brazil with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Fernanda was also key with 11 points and 3 assists.
Florencia Fernandez had 19 points for the Argentineans who won the first quarter 20-16.
Both teams kept the game close and changed the lead many times until the first 40 minutes ended at 66. In overtime Argentina couldn't keep their offensive attack and fell again.
"We played better than the first game. We defended better, forcing turnovers from Brazil. The offensive attack also improved. Our performance was better prior to the FIBA Americas Championship for Women. We have all the opportunities to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women," said the head coach of Argentina, Eduardo Pinto.
Carolina Sanchez scored 12 points for the Argentinean team who will return to Buenos Aires while Brazil faces Canada on September 17.
