Belgian leader Emma Meesseman will link up with her former club coach

The Cats have appointed a successor to the history-making Rachid Meziane.

BRUSSELS (Belgium) - Reigning FIBA Women's EuroBasket champions Belgium have appointed veteran playcaller Mike Thibault as their new head coach.

Agreeing a deal that will see him at the helm until 2028, the American will link back up with Cats' standout Emma Meesseman, who was MVP for Washington Mystics when the pair won the WNBA Championship.

Thibault is a three-time WNBA Coach of the Year and also won two NBA titles as an Assistant.

He also brings experience of coaching in the international arena as a two-time Olympian, winning golds as an Assistant for Team USA at Beijing 2008 and also last year in Paris.

Thibault replaces Rachid Meziane who has went in the other direction and swapped the coaching reins for a place in the WNBA with Connecticut Sun.

There is no room for Thibault to ease himself into the role, since Belgium still need to book their place for FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2025.

They will look to wrap up their campaign in the third and last qualifying window next month with games against Azerbaijan and Lithuania.
