MEN’S OLYMPIC BASKETBALL, 2008
Team Characteristics
Talented, athletic team. Play to the individual abilities of each player in a team setting. Know when to
force the action but play unselfishly. Can score in multitude of ways in half court, full court and from
free throw line. Deep bench allows for productive individual play on limited playing time. Rebound
ball well on defensive boards which sparks the transition game. Strong in the post and balanced in
the back court.
Offensive Tendencies

Half court offense fluxuates between 3 out/2 in and 4 out/1 in set. On ball screen and roll action
isolates post player in paint for high low passes after post seal. Transition accounts for a good piece
of their scoring output. Activity on the offense boards yield points on consistent basis. Good post play
opens perimeter and spacing for perimeter scoring opportunities. Good combination of structure and
one on one and isolation situations. Many plays are made form penetration or one on one plays.
Transition

Very potent transition game. Usually score on break or get fouled. Would rather take the ball hard to
the basket than shoot perimeter shot. All players are involved in transition. Post players run floor to
score or post on ball reversal.
Set Plays
- Perimeter
hand off, on ball screen and roll.
- 4
out, 1 in set. On ball screen and roll.
- Posts
low, baseline runner to post seal and score.

Main set on baseline OB is triple stack on the ball side and single player on weak side. Three cutters
on ball side get to corner, back side and to the ball. Once ball is in bounds there is on ball screening
action or ball reversal. Ball is thrown in from the side and on ball screening action occurs
immediately.
Zone Offense

Use some structure to begin possession but make play on penetration or individual play making
ability. 1-3-1 or high low set is most common. Post at free throw line can flash, on ball screen, or step
to perimeter on ball penetration.
Team Defense

Athletic ability and length strengthen their defensive effort and productivity. Ball pressure and next
pass denial cause frequent turnovers. In the full court they pick up man to man and run and jump.
Good rotation up the floor make passes ahead difficut. Challenge every play to the rim and block
shots. Gambling gets them out of position at times but help side defenders make up for it most of the
time.
