    Deodato propels Flamengo to overtime victory over Hebraica Macabi

    RIO DE JANEIRO (Brazil) – Gui Deodato was key to Flamengo's 92-87 victory in overtime against Hebraica Macabi in the first game of Group C of the Basketball Champions League Americas Season 5.

    RIO DE JANEIRO (Brazil) – Gui Deodato was key to Flamengo's 92-87 victory in overtime against Hebraica Macabi in the first game of Group C of the Basketball Champions League Americas Season 5.

     

    In order to get the win, the Mengao, which was the host at the Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, had to recover from a 13-point deficit at halftime (53-40). In the third quarter, Gustavo Conti’s squad responded and edged Hebraica Macabi 69-68, to then have a back and forth match in the fourth. Deodato forced overtime by tying it at 79 with two free throws, with 7.2 seconds on the clock. Then, the small foward contained Hebraica Macabi’s Luciano Parodi with his defense.

    In overtime, Deodato forced a turnover from Ernesto Oglivie and set up Gabriel Galvanini and Flamengo went up 88-86, with 11 seconds left. Then, with 9 seconds left, Deodato made two shots from the penalty area to lead his team to 90-87. And to top off his superb performance he recovered a ball that escaped Parodi’s hands and went on a fastbreak to the other side to place a layup and seal the victory for Flamengo.

    Deodato finished with 21 points, 4 assists and 2 steals, to accompany Galvanni who had a 27 points, 10 rebounds double-double. Point guard Scott Machado added 15 points and 11 assists for Flamengo.

    Franklin Hassell stood out with 23 points and 11 boards for Hebraica Macabi. Oglivie finished with 18, Jordan Williams with 15 (8 rebounds) and Golan Gutt with 12 (4 triples).

    On the second day of Group C action, Hebraica Macabi and Boca Jrs will meet at the Maracanazinho, starting at 9:10 p.m. local time.
