MONTERREY (FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019) - Mexico did not show its best version in the first window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers, where the Mexicans faced Cuba and the United States, for a 1-1 finish.
One of the emblematic players of the "12 Guerreros", Juan Toscano is the first to admit that the Mexicans need to improve on several factors for the rest of the Qualifiers.
"We were fine, we could have been better, but we failed. We know what we have to improve," said Juan Toscano in an interview with fiba.basketball.
Mexico began its qualifying campaign to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 in a full-packed Domo de la Feria in Guanajuato, where the team received the visit from Cuba.
"In the match against Cuba we attacked with a good system and rhythm. Taking advantage of all the advantages on both sides of the court," added Toscano. "You always play better at home. You manage to take out your pride and play even harder. You are playing in front of your country, and the people who support you. You have to play hard for them too," said the player who had a 15-point and 11-rebound “double-double”.
"Against the United States, we suffered the fate that had to happen. The next time we play against the United States, we must play better offensively, take advantage of the advantages we have, take care of the ball and fight for more rebounds," analyzed Toscano about the game played in Greensboro.
"For the next window, we have to leave those results behind and take care of the ball, play harder and attack all the advantages that come our way. But the keys to the game will always be to defend and rebound. We will continue to improve, to play harder, the sure thing is that we will compete at the level they demand," concluded Toscano, who plays for Fuerza Regia in the Mexican Professional League.
In the next window of Americas Qualifiers, the Mexicans will resume their rivalry against Puerto Rico on February 23. The Mexico team will then travel to Havana to face Cuba on February 26.
