Defending champions USA roll past Mexico, into Quarter-Finals

BARCELONA (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Reigning world champions USA posted their sixth successive win in eight days at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup beating 2013 FIBA Americas champions Mexico 86-63

BARCELONA (FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Reigning world champions USA posted their sixth successive win in eight days at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup beating 2013 FIBA Americas champions Mexico 86-63 at the Palau Sant Jordi in front of a capacity-crowd on Saturday.

The USA now await the winners of the Dominican Republic-Slovenia Round of 16 game.

Stephen Curry and James Harden, two of the more experienced players in FIBA competitions in the current USA roster, spread open the floor early on as the USA built a dozen-point lead midway through the first quarter.

Barring the occasional travelling violations, there was nothing to trouble the USA after that.

Curry, one of the three players in the current roster with the experience of the 2010 FIBA World Championship title, went on to finish with a personal FIBA events-high of 20 points, hitting six of his nine three-point attempts.

Harden, one of the two players from the 2012 London Olympics gold winning team, had a dozen points.

In contrast, Gustavo Ayon, one of the two Mexicans with NBA experience, ploughed a rather lonely furrow for the team with 25 points, his highest output in a game at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
