BUENOS AIRES (Olympics) - Argentina will be missing Walter Herrmann but the rest of their NBA-based contingent will be at the Beijing Games.
That means Andres Nocioni of Chicago, Luis Scola of Houston, Carlos Delfino of Toronto and both Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto of San Antonio will be at the Olympics to defend the gold medal they captured in Athens four years ago.
German Vaccaro, the vice-president of the Argentina Basketball Confederation recently visited North America and he said: "I met with the Argentinian players that play in the NBA and they officially confirmed to me that they will be playing at the Olympics in Beijing.
“It´s worth noting the interest that each of the Olympic champions showed when talking about the itinerary, the training venues, the trips....
"They proved yet again their closeness with the national team."
Vaccaro’s words will be reassuring for coach Sergio Hernandez.
Before Herrmann’s unexpected decision to retire from the national side several weeks ago, veteran point guard Pepe Sanchez announced he would no longer play for Argentina and would instead focus on his basketball career in Europe.
