Bahamas amazes, overpowers Mexico in Nassau

NASSAU (Bahamas) - Bahamas delivered the first upset of the FIBA AmeriCup 2021 Qualifiers, preparing a spectacular scenario for when the action resumes in November.
Against all prognostics, the Bahamian team defeated Mexico, 76-59, in the last game of Group D during the first window of the FIBA AmeriCup 2021 Qualifiers.
The Bahamas finished the window with a 1-1 record, but most importantly now has a point differential advantage over Mexico (+3) in case of a tie.
Mexico defeated Bahamas on Thursday, but on Sunday, the story was different. Bahamas came ready to fight and captured a 38-30 advantage at the end of the first half.
Then, in the third quarter, Mexico had no answer for an inspired Bahamas, that defended with a passion and was comfortable in offense. The host won the third quarter 20-8, to take a 20-point lead with 10 minutes of action left to play.
Mexico got back into the game and cut the difference to 10 points with 3:35 to play. Bahamas did not panic and with four straight points from David Nesbitt and two by Mychel Thompson regained control of the scoreboard, 73-57. With the game decided, Thompson scored a three-pointer with 38 seconds to capture a 17-point lead and that gave Bahamas the point differential advantage over Mexico.
Bridgewater was the best for Bahamas with 15 points, while D’Shon Taylor added 14 points and six rebounds. Thompson added 11 points and eight rebounds.
For Mexico, Francisco Cruz scored 21 points and De Haro got 12 points.
