COLORADO Springs (Americas U18) - USA Basketball announced their list of 27 athletes set to compete for 12 spots in the roster for the FIBA Americas U18 Women’s Championship to be played on July 13-17 in Valdivia, Chile and the experience of the candidates is immediately apparent.

The competition to make the team will be intense as 14 of the 27 players have prior USA Basketball experience, headlined by Lauren Cox and Crystal Dangerfield, gold-medal winners in last year's FIBA U19 World Championship.

Cox also won gold as a member of the 2014 USA Women's U17 World Championship Team, and she and Dangerfield won gold as members of the 2013 USA Women's U16 National Team.

The trials are set to take place on May 26-30 in the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, venue that hosted the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in which USA won the gold medal the 12 players selected for this year’s team will look to defend.

"There is a strong group of returning athletes that will benefit from the additional opportunities. We also have a strong group of first-time participants," said Jim Foster, chair of the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Committee.

"This should allow us to choose a team very capable of qualifying the United States for next year's FIBA U19 World Championship."

The 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women’s Championship to be played on July 13-17 in Valdivida, Chile will qualify four teams to the 2017 FIBA U19 World Championship.

The 2016 USA Basketball Women's U18 National Team will be led by head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio.
