ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - The 2023 FIBA Africa calendar will offer a number of major continental competitions for the next eight months.
Following the conclusion of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers in February and the completion of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference last month in Dakar, Senegal, FIBA.basketball brings you an update of the 2023 African Basketball Calendar:
Nile Conference (Cairo, April 26 - May 6)
Six club teams will battle it out in the Egyptian capital for the right to secure the top four places of the Conference for the BAL Playoffs in May in Kigali, Rwanda.
Teams competing in the Nile Conference include hosts Al Ahly, Cape Town Tigers (South Africa), City Oilers (Uganda), Ferroviario da Beira (Mozambique), Petro de Luanda (Angola) and Seydou Legacy Athletique Club (Guinea).
Draw for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup (April, 29, Manila, Philippines)
Angola, Cape Verde, Cote d'Ivoire, Egypt and South Sudan - the five African nations qualified for this year's World Cup - will find out their opponents when the draw for the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup takes place in Manila, Philippines on April 29.
The 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup will run from August 25 to September 10, in Jakarta (Indonesia), Tokyo (Japan) and Manila (Philippines).

BAL Playoffs (Kigali, May 21-28)
Teams qualified for the BAL Playoffs - after finishing in the top four places of the Sahara Conference - include Abidjan Basket Club (Cote d'Ivoire), AS Douanes (Senegal), Rwanda Energy Group (Rwanda) and Stade Malien (Mali).
FIBA AfroCan Qualifiers (February to June 2023)
Africa Zone 1 teams (Algeria, Libya and Tunisia) will gather from June 21-25 to determine the region's representative at the Final Round. The host country of this qualifier is yet to be determined.
Africa Zone 5 teams, which consists of Burundi, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya (qualified), Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, and Tanzania, will compete for the only Final Round spot in Dar es Salaam from June 17-23.
As we write, no dates, nor host countries have been determined for the qualifiers of Zones 2, 3, and 7.
FIBA AfroCan (Luanda, July 7-16)
The FIBA AfroCan returns this summer for the first time since 2019. The 12-nation competition will take place in the Angolan capital of Luanda between July 7 to 16.
The semifinalists from the 2019 qualified automatically for this year's tournament. Those teams are Angola (third-place), DR Congo, (champions) Kenya (runners-up) and Morocco (fourth-place).
Other teams qualified for the tournament so far include Cameroon - winners of Zone 4 qualifiers -, and Mozambique, who clinched the top spot from Zone 6.
FIBA U16 Africa Championships (Tunisia, July 13-23)
The Final Round of the FIBA U16 African Championships for Boys and Girls will take place in Tunisia from July 13-22. The host city is yet to be confirmed.
This tournament will serve as a qualifier for the 2024 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup for Men and Women.
The teams qualified for the Girls Tournament so far are as follows: Algeria, Angola, Chad, Egypt, Mali and hosts Tunisia. The remaining six teams will be determined through regional qualifiers at a later date.
The teams qualified for the Boys Tournament so far are: Algeria, Angola, Egypt, Mali Uganda and Tunisia.
2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket (Kigali, July 28- August 6)
The five teams that qualified automatically for the 2023 12-team FIBA Women's AfroBasket are: Cameroon, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal. Rwanda qualified as hosts.
Meanwhile, DR Congo - winners of the Zone 4 qualifier - and Egypt, who finished top of Zone 5, have also secured their places in the tournament.
Representatives from Zones 1, 2, 3 and 7 will be determined at a later date. FIBA Africa will allocate two wild cards to complete the 12-team event.
The draw for the 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket will take place in Kigali on May 27.
Road to BAL (September to November 2023)
The qualification round for the BAL Season 4 will run from September to November 2023.
FIBA Women's Basketball Africa League (Egypt, December 8-17)
Ten clubs from different parts of the continent will battle it out in Egypt for the right to win the newly-rebranded FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women from December 8-17. The host city is yet to be confirmed.
FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup (Women/Men)
The 2023 FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup will take place in Spain between July 15 to 23 in Spain. Egypt and Mali will represent the continent of African in the event.
The 2023 FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup (Men) will take place between June 24 and July 2 in Hungary. Egypt and Madagascar earned the right to represent Africa in the competition.
FIBA Africa Pre-Olympic Qualifying
Meanwhile, the FIBA Africa Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament is set to be held between August 12-20. This tournament will consist of seven teams who came up short in the Second Round of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers plus Mali.
