TOKYO (Japan) - Record-breaker and Tokyo 2020 standout Rui Machida is in contention for the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024 after being included in Japan's 18-player list.
Gathering for a third training camp ahead of the upcoming preparation games against arch Asian rivals China, Machida's possible return will have fans excited - and not just those cheering for the Akatsuki Five.
The guard famously set a new all-time assists record when passing the rock 18 times for the silver medalists in the Semi-Final clash against France in the Japanese capital.
In Machida's absence since the last Olympics, a new leader and exciting marquee player has emerged in the shape of Mai Yamamoto. She was sensational at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2023 and the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024 when she was crowned MVP.
Elsewhere on the candidate list, there is extensive talent and experience, with veteran playmaker Asami Yoshida, captain Maki Takada and defensive powerhouse Himawari Akaho all providing big leadership qualities.
There will be athleticism and the usual dynamic play from sister act Evelyn and Stephanie Mawuli, with Yuki Miyazawa, Saori Miyazaki and Nako Motohashi likely to be influential too.
