    MIES (Switzerland) - Twelve nations anxiously await the start of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024. Here is everything you need to know about the events which are taking place July 28 to August 11.

    Who is hosting the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024?

    The Olympics Games 2024 are hosted in France.

    The Group Phase of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024 is hosted in Lille at Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

    The Final Phase will be hosted in Paris at the Bercy Arena.

    When is the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024?

    The games will be played from July 28 to August 11.

    Who are the teams competing?

    There are a total of 12 teams competing in the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024.

    Universality remains in place for the qualifying process for the Olympic Games, thereby ensuring that each continent is represented.

    With regular and competitive tournaments scheduled throughout the year, the qualification system tipped off in November 2023 to qualify teams for the Olympic Games.

    For this current cycle, there was a FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament in one region - Americas – in November 2023, with 4 national teams playing in order to qualify for one of four global FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Accordingly, the 2 first placed teams in the FIBA Women's Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament were qualified for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments taking place in February 2024. USA (winner of the FIBA Women's World Cup 2022) plus the best following ranked team in the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2023 were directly qualified for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments 2024.

    In the other regions (Africa, Asia/Oceania, and Europe), teams qualified directly for the FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments from each FIBA Women's Continental Cup.

    • 4 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women's Asia Cup 2023

    • 6 highest placed teams in the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2023

    A total of 16 teams participated in one of four global FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournaments taking place from 8 to 11 February 2024, 12 of them, including the host (France*) and the Winner of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022 (USA), qualified to the Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament.

    Africa: Nigeria Americas: Canada, USA and Puerto Rico Asia: Japan, China Europe: France, Belgium, Germany, Serbia and Spain Oceania: Australia

    What is the format?

    In the Group Phase, the 12 teams are divided into 3 groups (A, B and C) of 4 teams each. This stage of the competition is played in a round-robin format, with each team playing all other teams in its group (a total of 3 games for each team).

    The teams placed first and second in each group and the 2 best third-placed teams in the Group Phase qualify for the Final Phase.

    The remaining 4 teams take no further part in the competition.

    In the Final Phase, a draw will take place following the conclusion of the Group Phase to determine the pairings of the Quarter-Finals.

    The qualified teams shall be divided into four pots. The cumulative ranking between the three groups, established according to the FIBA Official Basketball Rules, Chapter D - Classification of Teams, will assign positions from 1st to 8th place to the eight teams qualified for the Quarter-Finals.

    Pot D shall consist of the two-best-ranked teams, Pot E of the 3rd and 4th ranked teams, Pot F of the 5th and 6th ranked teams and Pot G of the 7th and 8th ranked teams.

    The teams from Pot D will be drawn against the teams from Pot G and the teams from Pot E will be drawn against the teams from Pot F.

    Teams from the same group in the Group Phase cannot be drawn against each other in the Quarter-Finals.

    The four winners of the Quarter-Finals will qualify for the Semi-Finals (places 1-4).

    Winners of the Quarter-Finals played by the teams from Pot D cannot play each other in the Semi-Final games.

    The four teams eliminated in the Quarter-Finals shall take no further part in the competition. The classification of teams from 5th to 8th place shall be established according to the FIBA Official Basketball Rules.

    Who are the defending champions?

    Team USA won the previous edition of the competition defeating hosts Japan, 90-75, in the Final of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Tokyo 2021. It was their seventh straight time and ninth over all winning the competition

    Who are the players to watch?

    There will be stars aplenty at the Men’s Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024.
