LILLE (France) - The Group Phase of the Men's Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024 will see four team eliminated as eight teams advance to the Quarter-Finals.

The competition has been intense as expected, considering the level of talent on display in Paris.

    Canada

Canada needed to wait but the North Americans reached the Quarter-Finals on Gameday 2 after beating Australia thanks to France knocking off Japan and Germany defeating Brazil. The Canadians came to Paris on a high after finishing third at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 for their first medal. Appearing in the Olympics for the first time since 2000, Canada also continued their streak of consecutive top-eight finishes.

They took fourth place in 1976 and 1984 and then sixth in 1988 and seventh in 2000.

    Germany

Germany locked up their ticket to the Quarter-Finals as they defeated Brazil following France's win over Japan earlier in the day. Germany moved to 2-0 in Group B and have reached the final eight for two consecutive Olympics - the first time that has happened for the nation. Germany have finished among the top eight three times previously - 1984, 1992 and 2021.

Their best-ever showing was seventh in 1992.

    France

France have made their way to the Quarter-Finals of the 2024 Olympics after they beat Japan and Germany later in the day knocked off Brazil. France improved to 2-0 in Group B to reach the top eight for the fourth consecutive Olympics, having finished sixth in 2012 and 2016 and then taking silver in 2021.

The three-time silver medalists (1948, 2000 and 2021) are in the final eight for the eighth time in total.

    USA

USA have never finished outside the top eight of an Olympics where they played and that streak will continue as Steve Kerr's team moved into the Quarter-Finals with a victory over South Sudan - combined with previous wins on Gameday 2 by France and Germany. USA also have locked up first place in Group C.

USA in fact have never missed the podium, winning the last four gold medals and 16 golds in total. They took silver in 1972 and bronze in 1988 and 2004.

    Brazil

Brazil missed out on making it to their Quarter-Finals when they hosted the Olympic Games in 2016 and missed the Tournament altogether in Tokyo 2020. They've clinched their spot among the last eight teams in Paris, however, after claiming a big win against Japan.

Brazil haven't won a medal since 1964 when they won their third bronze medal after also finishing third in 1960 and 1948.

    Australia

It took them 15 appearances until Australia were able to win their first medal at the Olympic Games - a bronze in 2020. Since 1976, they've failed to make the Quarter-Finals only once in 2004 and, even though they had to sweat it out a bit, they have made it to the round of the final eight.

The Boomers will be looking to make it to the Semi-Finals for a third straight time, while a trip to the gold medal game would be their best result ever.

    Serbia

Serbia's win against South Sudan qualifies the team for the Final Phase in Paris.

    Greece

Serbia's win against South Sudan sent Greece to Paris with a better point differential than South Sudan, third best team amongst teams finishing third of their group.
