World Cup MVP Schroder headlines 16-man Germany squad

HAGEN (Germany) - All 12 players that won the FIBA Basketball World Cup for the first time for Germany last summer are the country's 16-man squad for the Olympics.

Led by captain Dennis Schroder, who spearheaded the run to the title under coach Gordie Herbert and was named MVP of the tournament, Germany will now take aim at a World Cup and Olympic double.

Head Coach Herbert said he wants his team to win a third medal in three summers. Germany took bronze at home in the FIBA EuroBasket 2022, won it all last summer at the World Cup, and this group sure looks capable of staying at the top of the world basketball stage

Herbert has plenty of experience, versatility, size, shooting, ball-handling and rim protection.

In the squad is the 2.03m (6ft 8in) Isaac Bonga, who can guard any position on the court and impact games in a myriad of ways. Also in the group are the Wagner brothers, Moritz and Franz, who have plenty of skill and can also be physical, whether it's defending or crashing the boards for rebounds.

There is plenty of talent in the front court. Daniel Theis, an athletic and strong 2.03m power forward/center, and Johannes Voigtmann, a 2.11m (6ft 11in) center, can score and defend. Johannes Thiemann is an invaluable 2.05m (6ft 9in) power forward that is comfortable starting or coming off the bench.

Germany also possess one of the best shooters in the world in Andreas Obst, whose four three-balls and 24 points led the country past the USA in the Semi-Finals at the World Cup.

    ...

Obst shot 44.7 percent (17 of 38) from long range in the tournament. The year before at the FIBA EuroBasket in Germany, he connected on a tournament high 25 shots (48.1 percent) from behind the arc as the team finished third.

Point guard Maodo Lo and forward Niels Giffey also play valuable roles off the bench for Germany, who will play in Group B at the Men's Olympic Basketball Tournament Paris 2024 with France, Japan and the team that wins the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia.
