    Here's your one-stop shop about the newest women's league in the region

    CHENGDU (China) - After much anticipation, the FIBA Women's Basketball League Asia (WBL Asia) will finally open shop on Thursday night in this beautiful city.

    For sure, the wait comes along with many questions, given that this will be the inaugural edition of the newest league in the region. What is this, really? Which teams are competing? Where to watch? Fret not as we got you covered - always.

    What is the FIBA WBL Asia?

    The WBL was first established in the Americas and the success of which inspired the idea of bringing the league to this part of the world. The FIBA WBL Asia was green-lit during the first Asia Board meeting of the 2023-2027 cycle in Dubai, UAE.

    Scheduled annually, the new premier club competition aligns with FIBA’s strategic priority for the current four-year working cycle, “Women in Basketball." This will play a role so pivotal in advancing the development of women’s basketball across Asia.

    When and where will it take place?

    The games will be played at the state-of-the-art Phoenix Hill Sports Park, particularly in the 18,000-seater Jinqiang International Event Center. Officially opened in 2022, the whole complex is located at the Jinniu District of Chengdu.

    Which teams are playing?

    Four teams are set to compete, led by hosts and reigning two-time China Women's Basketball Association champions Sichuan Yuanda Meile Basketball Club.

    The Pandas will be joined by Women's Japanese Basketball League queens Fujitsu Red Wave; Women's Super Basketball League dynasty Cathay Life Tigers of Chinese Taipei; and Indonesian women's hoops powerhouse Surabaya Fever.

    What is the format?

    The participating teams will compete in a single round-robin format across September 26-28. The team with the best record will win the inaugural FIBA WBL Asia crown.
