Angola, Mozambique to go all out for automatic Women's AfroBasket ticket

    Preview

Southern African giants Angola and Mozambique have a reputation for being ever-present at Women's AfroBasket.

LUANDA (Angola) - The FIBA Women's AfroBasket Zone 6 Qualifiers will be held in Luanda, Angola (3-8 February).

In this year's tournament, only hosts Angola and Mozambique will be competing for an automatic berth at this year's Women's AfroBasket in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (25 July - 3 August).

Ahead of the zonal qualifiers, FIBA.baskeball looks back at the previous edition of the 2023 Southern African Qualifiers.

This year's zonal qualifiers featured hosts Zimbabwe, Angola, Mozambique and Zambia.

Six group games determined the top two finishers (Mozambique and Angola), with Mozambique securing an automatic place at the 2023 Women's AfroBasket tournament.

Mozambique finished with a record of 7-0, Angola 4-3, Zimbabwe 2-4 and Zambia 0-6.

Mozambique topped Zone 6 in scoring (87.0 points) and efficiency (103.4) en route to their 18th Women's AfroBasket with the likes of Ingvild Mucauro (12.8 rebounds per game, 4.3 rebounds per game and 2.3 assists per game) and Stefania Chiziane (12.4 points per game, 1.7 rebounds per game and 1.9 assists per game).

Two-time Women's AfroBasket champions Angola finished runners-up to Mozambique in the qualifiers two years ago. Their only defeat in the qualifiers came against Mozambique three times (in the group stage and in the final).

Cristina Matiquite was Angola's leading scorer in the 2023 qualifiers (16.3 points per game), and she was also a solid rebounder (8.4 rebounds per game).

Fortunately for Angola, they secured their place at the 2023 Women's AfroBasket on a wild card.

With the qualifiers taking place on Angolan soil, can the hosts overcome their southern African neighbours and book their ticket to Côte d'Ivoire?
