Drastic move for Gulf League 'three-peat' bidders

BEIRUT (Lebanon) - Kuwait Club will head into Game 2 of the 2024/2025 FIBA WASL-Gulf League Qualification to Semi-Finals with possibly a new coach.

The defending, two-time Sub-Zone League champions deemed it best that a change of leadership in the locker room could be what the team needs in an attempt to keep their 'three-peat' aspirations alive by parting ways with Peter Schomers.

It marks the end of what had been a fruitful partnership between the club and the German mentor, which lasted for a total of eight seasons and led to multiple titles.

That, of course, includes back-to-back championships in the WASL-Gulf League, not to mention their golden runs in the Kuwaiti Division 1 Basketball League.

Schomers coached his final game with Kuwait Club in Game 1 of their QSF series against Saudi Arabia's Ittihad Club, in which they lost by way of a 96-87 result on their own home floor at the Shaikh Saad Alabdullah Sport Hall Complex.

The club is expected to announce Schomers' replacement soon and there's no doubt that he will have big shoes to fill in manning the helm for the perennial contenders.

If ever, the new coach could have his baptism of fire in Game 2 next week, which Kuwait Club have no choice but to win if they are to stay alive.

The team is coming into the all-important affair on a rare two-game losing slide and eyes will surely be on them if they'd be able to snap out of it in time.

Another thing that fans are wondering is if they'd be able to stop an Ittihad team which has grown confident of their chances following that massive Game 1 upset, which put them a win away from the Semi-Finals - and ending the Kuwaitis' reign.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is set February 11 at the Green Basketball Court in Jeddah. Tip-off time is scheduled at 19:00 local time.
