The FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2024 tips off on Sunday and FIBA.basketball is giving insights into the tournament in South Africa (September 1-14).
The tournament, formerly known as the FIBA U18 African Championship, was first held in 1977 and in that time six different countries won the competition.

The FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2024 finalists will earn the right to represent Africa at next year's FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in Switzerland.

Players to watch out for in this year’s AfroBasket tournament are Morocco’s Omar Karem, Egypt's Mohammed Hussin, Uganda's Tejan Rugette and Kyllian Toure of Cote d'Ivoire.
RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA
This year’s tournament will see South Africa host it for the second time in the capital city, Pretoria (University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall), the first was in 2006, which was won by Nigeria.
MOST TITLES
The Egyptian men’s U18 team come to this year’s tournament in South Africa as the defending champions and the Pharaohs and Nigeria have the most titles, six each.
FIRST AND LAST MVP WINNERS
The first MVP of the tournament was Cote d’Ivoire’s Michel Lasme in 1998, the last was Madagascar’s Matias M’madi in 2022.
NEWCOMERS
The tournament in South Africa will see two countries, Cameroon and Zambia make their debut.
ANGOLA
Four-time champions, Angola lead the way in tournament appearances and this year’s tournament will be their 20th.
