    Who are the 16 teams playing at the U17 World Cup?

    Here is a brief look at the 16 teams playing at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024.

    MIES (Switzerland) - The FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024 will tip off in Türkiye on June 29 with 16 teams hoping to claim the trophy when it's all said and done on July 7. Here is a look at the teams participating in the seventh edition of the biennial tournament.

    Argentina

    Argentina secured their seventh appearance in seven FIBA U17 World Cups by taking fourth place at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2023. Ivan Prato and Tyler Kropp both averaged double-doubles (13.2 points and 10.3 rebounds and 10.2 points and 10.5 rebounds, respectively). Argentina finished sixth in 2012 for their best showing.

    Australia

    Dash Daniels

    Australia booked their ticket to the FIBA U17 World Cup by winning the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2023. Dash Daniels led the team in scoring with 12.0 points and both Indy Cotton and Nash Walker had 11.8 points. Australia have never missed the global tournament and grabbed second place in 2012 and 2014.

    Canada

    Canada took second place at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2023 to reach the FIBA U17 World Cup - a tournament they have never missed. Paul Osaruyi led Canada in scoring (14.8 ppg) and rebounds (8.3 rpg). Canada's top finish dates back to 2010 when they took third place.

    China

    China locked up their ticket to the FIBA U17 World Cup by finishing third at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2023. Boyuan Zhang poured in 20.5 points per game as the team's leading scorer. China are playing in the world tournament for the sixth time and finished seventh in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

    Egypt

    Egypt finished second at the FIBA U16 AfroBasket 2023 to reach the FIBA U17 World Cup for the seventh time in seven tournaments. Ali Assran led Egypt with a double-double of 11.6 points and 10.4 rebounds. The Africans' top showing on the global stage was 10th place in 2022.

    France

    France took third place at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023 to reach the FIBA U17 World Cup for the sixth straight edition. Akram Naji topped France in scoring (15.0 ppg) and assists (4.1 apg) and Hugo Yimga scored 14.0 points. France claimed second place in 2018 and were third in 2022.

    Germany

    Declan Duru

    Germany snatched the final spot from the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023 at the FIBA U17 World Cup with a fifth place finish. Mathieu Grujicic and Davi Remagen both scored 14.4 points per game - though neither will be in Istanbul. Declan Duru had 12.0 points and 9.9 rebounds. Germany's only other appearance came in 2010 when they were eighth as host team.

    Guinea

    Guinea made history by winning the FIBA U16 AfroBasket 2023 to reach the FIBA U17 World Cup for the first time. Nour Gassim Toure collected 20.0 points and 8.1 rebounds and Arapaho Diane tallied 17.4 points and 17.3 rebounds. Guinea will be making their first appearance on the global stage.

    Italy

    Italy grabbed second place at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023 to reach the FIBA U17 World Cup. Diego Garavaglia was the team's top scorer with 15.0 points while Maikcol Perez picked up 12.7 points and 9.0 rebounds. Italy finished ninth in their only previous U17 World Cup appearance in 2014.

    Lithuania

    Lithuania finished fourth at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023 to advance to the FIBA U17 World Cup for the fifth time. Dovydas Buika and Arturas Butajevas finished first and second in scoring (16.3 and 15.6), rebounds (9.9 and 4.7) and assists (4.7 and 2.0). Lithuania's top showing on the global stage was third place in 2016.

    New Zealand

    Oscar Goodman

    New Zealand secured their third straight appearance at the FIBA U17 World Cup after grabbing second place at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2023. Lachlan Crate led the team in scoring with 15.2 points and Oscar Goodman took home MVP honors with 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds. New Zealand took 12th place in 2022.

    Philippines

    Philippines will be playing in the FIBA U17 World Cup for the third time as they took fourth place at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup 2023. Kieffer Alas was the team's leading scorer (15.4 ppg) and rebounder (8.6 rpg). Philippines claimed 13th place in 2018 for their best performance.

    Puerto Rico

    Puerto Rico finished third at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2023 to return to the FIBA U17 World Cup after missing the 2022 global tournament. Felipe Quinones paced Puerto Rico in scoring with 18.7 points and added a team-high 3.5 assists. Puerto Rico's top performance at the FIBA U17 World Cup was third place in 2018.

    Spain

    Spain enter the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024 after winning the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023. The Iberians were led by Guillermo Del Pino and Gildas Gimenez, who both averaged more than 14 points. Spain's best result at the U17 World Cup came in 2022 when they took second place.

    Türkiye

    Derin Can Ustun

    Türkiye slumped to 10th place at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023 but will play at the FIBA U17 World Cup as hosts. Kaan Onat averaged 15.4 points and Derin Can Ustun tallied 15.0 points last summer. Türkiye's best showing came in 2016 when they were second.

    USA

    United States rolled to another title at the FIBA U16 AmeriCup 2023 to reach the FIBA U17 World Cup. The Americans were paced by Koa Peat's 17.2 points and 8.3 rebounds and Cameron Boozer chipped in 16.8 points and 9.8 rebounds. USA have a 44-0 all-time record at the global tournament with six titles - 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2022.
