MADRID (Spain) - Spain took the first step towards what it hopes will be a successful FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2024 by naming the 16 players who will fight for a spot in this summer's highlight in Türkiye - a player pool including 11 players who captured the title at the FIBA U16 EuroBasket 2023.
Head coach Joaquin Prado and his staff with start work with his team on June 4 and has two friendly tournaments planned: June 13-15 in Huesca and June 22-24 in Utebo.
Prado and his staff nominated 11 players who helped Spain win last summer's U16 continental championship - topped by the two leading scorers Gildas Gimenez and Guillermo Del Pino. The other players from the title winning team are Daniel Balde, Alberto Blanco, Ignacio Campoy, Eric Del Castillo, Maximo Garcia-Plata, Andy Huelves, Sergi Kemu, Ian Platteeuw and Ruben Salazar. Dedac Cebolla is the only player missing from last year's squad.

Spain finished second at the FIBA U17 World Cup two summers ago in Spain. That was the first time the country got past the Semi-Finals, having lost in 2012, 2016 and 2018 and finishing fourth all four times.
Spain have been drawn into Group A of the U17 World Cup from June 27 to July 7 along with Lithuania, Philippines and Puerto Rico.
