Who were the winners in 2023?
In a repeat of the 2022 Final, France - like they did a year before - secured a narrow 67-63 victory over rivals Spain. Les Bleues trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but turned the tables around behind the duo of Lilyana Fontcha and Ainhoa Risacher in the second half.
Fontcha finished with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Risacher added 15 points. Sara Okeke was Spain's leading scorer with 13 points.
Czechia, Portugal and Turkiye were the relegated nations, with the trio of Germany, Montenegro and Sweden replacing them from Division B.
Former MVPs
Risacher was named tournament MVP after guiding France to the title last summer. To go with her 15 points in the Final, she averaged 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.0 steals a game.
The previous five winners are as follows:
2023: Ainhoa Risacher (FRA) 2022: Iyana Martin (ESP) 2019: Anastasiia Kosu (RUS) 2018: Caterina Gilli (ITA) 2017: Iliana Rupert (FRA)
Roll of honor
Spain are the only team to have reached double-digits in terms of titles and they are also the nation with the most podium finishes in competition history, but their last success was back in 2016.
The Soviet Union still hold the record for the longest gold rush after winning the first six editions from 1976-1987.
