MIAMI (United States) – David Díaz will coach the Dominican Republic National Team during Window 1 of the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifiers, to be played on February 22-26, as announced by the Dominican Basketball Federation (Fedombal).
Díaz boasts a near decade-long career within the Dominican national team ranks, working as an assistant under head coaches Kenny Atkinson, José Mercedes, Melvin López and Néstor García.
“We’re more than sure that David has the necessary experience to take over the team. He’s the perfect coach to lead us in this first (qualifying) window for AmeriCup. He’s a consummate professional who gets along with all the players,” said Fedombal president Rafael Uribe in a press statement.
Born in the Dominican Republic, the 46-year-old Díaz has been on the national team coaching staff since 2015. He has experience as head coach in different domestic leagues, and his resume includes 3 domestic league titles (2013, 2016 and 2019) at the helm of Indios de San Francisco de Marcorís and Leones de Santo Domingo. In his career as a player, he played for the national team at the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games.
Díaz will replace Argentinian coach Nestor García, who is currently coaching at the club level in Bahrain.
