There were triumphant scenes after they overcome Mali 56-48, behind 17 points from Ana Ramos to finish second in Group D behind Spain, who dismissed Brazil.
Italy picked up a first loss as they were beaten 59-55 by the USA, but they made the holders sweat as their opponents took pole position in Group C off the back of 20 points from Christyn Williams. With Italy finishing second, it was Czech Republic who took third after they beat Korea 92-54.
Earlier in the day, Canadian sensation Laeticia Amihere recorded another magnificent double-double, with her 20 points and 16 rebounds facilitating a 70-55 success against Japan and first place in Group A.
Australia are also yet to suffer a loss as they moved to 3-0 to reign supreme in Group B after holding off France 55-48, with Jasmine Simmons impressing with 13 points and nine rebounds. China took second place in the group after strolling past the still winless Mexico.
