MANILA (Philippines) - Serbia and Germany are poised to take part in the Olympic Games next summer after securing their status as the two best ranked teams from Europe at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

After securing wins in their Quarter-Finals matchups, Serbia and Germany will participate in the Semi-Finals. With Slovenia's loss to Canada and Latvia's loss to Germany in the Quarter-Finals, both teams are now out of contention to be one of the two best-placed European teams at the World Cup.

Since May 2006, this is the first time that Serbia have qualified directly for the Olympic Games. Since then, they have missed both the 2008 and 2012 editions. In 2016, after winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia reached the Final of the Olympic Games, losing to USA in the Gold Medal game. In 2020, the team lost to Italy in the Final at home of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Since 1992, this is the first time that Germany have qualified directly for the Olympic Games. In 2008 and 2021, they participated after winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. Germany's best result after six participations at the summer event is 7th place at Barcelona in 1992. In Tokyo, the team reached the Quarter-Finals but finished 8th.

The two European teams are the seventh and eighth confirmed teams alongside Paris 2024 hosts France, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Sudan, and USA. All direct qualification berths to Paris 2024 have now been claimed.
