Australia v France
A couple of international basketball heavyweights trade blows in the first game of the tournament early Saturday afternoon at the Carioca Arena 1. Last year's FIBA Oceania Championship winners Australia have yet to reach the podium at a Summer Games while France are looking to trying to get an Olympic medal for the first time since 2000, when they claimed silver in Sydney. There will be plenty of star power as both rosters are stocked with players from the NBA, top clubs in their respective countries and Europe. Australia center Andrew Bogut is still getting back to his best after hurting his knee in the NBA Finals while a player with Golden State, and France's Utah Jazz pivot Rudy Gobert is looking to give his team a lift after missing their FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) triumph in Manila to recover from various knocks this past season.
China v USA
Two teams that met on the opening day of the Beijing Games eight years ago will start their Olympic campaigns against each other as 2015 FIBA Asia Championship winners China clash with 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup winners USA. In the second game at the Carioca Arena 1, the Americans will give Olympic debuts to 10 players. Only Carmelo Anthony (2004, 2008 and 2012) and Kevin Durant (2012) having featured at previous Summer Games. The USA roster has four players - Kyrie Irving, DeMar DeRozan, DeMarcus Cousins and Klay Thompson - from their World Cup-winning roster. China, whose Yi Jianlian will play at a fourth Games, will give numerous Olympic debuts, too, including one to promising center Zhou Qi, a second round draft pick this summer by the Houston Rockets.
Venezuela v Serbia
Venezuela are back in the Olympics for the first time since 1992 following last year's stunning FIBA Americas Championship success when they upset Canada in the Semi-Finals before beating Argentina in the title game. The coach of the South Americans, Nestor 'Che' Garcia, will match wits with Serbia boss Sasha Djordjevic, who steered a talented side to a comprehensive victory at the OQT in Belgrade.
