Captain Thunot helps keep Tahiti's finals hopes alive

GUAM (FIBA Oceania Championship 2017) – Tahiti put on a display of teamwork in their 97-36 defeated of the Marshall Islands. This takes Tahiti to 1-1 and still in contention for a Division A final. 

The game got off to a great start with both teams playing a fast paced and physical game on both ends of the floor. It wasn’t until just before the quarter-time break where Tahiti put the foot down.

Tahiti forced 42 turnovers which led to their 40 fastbreak points. They also used their physicality to pound the boards, grabbing 62 rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end. They were scoring in the paint with ease, racking up 60 of their 97 points from the inside.

Team captain Manarai Thunot scored 16 points and was proud of his team’s performance.

“It was a good game that gives confidence to our team, and helps us for tomorrow.”

Thunot also said that his team came into the game more confident than their last.

“We had a tough game against Australia but we knew that we had what it takes to get the win today. I’m happy we could make it happen."

As captain, Thunot accepts the challenges and responsibilities that come with the title.

“I want to help his team succeed during the tournament, this role is a big responsibility for anyone to have, I am happy to have been given the role.”

Tahiti continues pool play against Guam tomorrow at 5:00pm (GMT+10).
