LAGOS - Kano Pillars beat Nigeria Customs 71-53 over the weekend in Lagos to become the 2016 DSTV Premier League Basketball champions. In the process, Nigeria new champions secured a place in the FIBA Africa Champions Cup Zone 3 qualifier for this year’s African Champions Cup (ACC).

Having finished runners-up to local rivals Mark Mentors last season, this is Kano Pillars' fifth national title after clinching Nigeria's flagship tournament in 2009, 2010, 2013 and 2014.

Usman sparked Kano Pillars to their fifth national title since 2009

Nigerian international Abubakar Usman propelled Kano Pillars with 24 points and was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Finals.

Two-time ACC bronze medallist (1985 and 1987), Kano Pillars claimed a Seventh-Place in last year’s ACC in Luanda, Angola, thanks to a 77-75 success over Cape Verde champions Bairro.

Following Kano Pillars' latest success, the team's head coach Sani Ahmed has already set his sights on the ACC, whose hosts and schedule are yet to be confirmed.

Kano Pillar's ACC goal, Ahmed says, is to do better than last year.

    ...

“We are very happy to reclaim the title,” Ahmed said to the local press. “I must commend Nigeria Customs for giving us a good fight but the attention now is for us to do well on the continent.”
