YAOUNDE (AfroBasket Women 2015) - Mozambique's ace Deolinda Gimo has proved too much for South Africa in Day 3 at AfroBasket Women 2015 on Saturday in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Gimo dominated both ends of the floor to finish with game-highs 19 points and 10 rebounds as Mozambique trounced neighbouring South Africa 86-43 in Group A's first action.
Turning Point: South Africa led the first five minutes of the game, however, Deolinda Ngulela responded with a combination of exuberant plays, and Kimathi Taboti's side struggled to cope with the veteran guard's pace.
Ngulela finished the first ten minutes with seven points, and sat out the rest of the game.
Stats Don't Lie: Mozambique led 31-24 at half-time, but used a 32-4 in the third quarter to decide the contest.
Game Hero: South Africa's defense never coped with Gimo's rhythm pace as the 1.88m power forward shot from almost everywhere. Gimo made 4 of 7 from the paint and decorated her performance making 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.
Bottom Line: It was Mozambique's second victory win in three games as they improve to 2-1 mark before facing title contenders Mali and close their Group Phase campaign against Gabon.
South Africa are yet to win a game, but they showed some scoring improvement as they finished with their tournament-high 43 points as three players scored ten points or more.
