DUBAI (United Arab Emirates) FIBA was announced as one of the winners of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award.
FIBA won the award in the ‘International Organizations’ category, as a member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF), for its Youth Leadership Program executed during this year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup.
FIBA’s submitted creative work focused on the Mascot Education Program (MEP) - which encourages recycling best practices among youth, through ‘JIP’ - the official mascot at the 2023 World Cup.
The MEP was launched well ahead of the FIBA World Cup within the three host countries - Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Built-in-back hoop and power shoes
With its built-in-back hoop and power shoes run on energy converted from recycled waste, JIP inspires the next generation of Youth Leaders to find creative and sustainable solutions to the world’s most pressing environmental concerns.
Following an initial 3-day Youth Leaders Workshop in Manila, 14 Youth Leaders from the three host countries were equipped to implement the MEP within their local communities, while being accompanied through monthly virtual mentoring sessions.
Implementation of the program was made possible thanks to FIBA Foundation’s partner Molten - which provided basketballs that were distributed by the Youth Leaders during their school visits.
All these undertaken initiatives will become sustainable Basketball For Good projects to ensure a long-term impact and leave a lasting social legacy for future generations of the World Cup hosts' local communities.
Recognizing creativity
Initiated in 2009, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award - named after the Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai - recognizes creative solutions that have contributed to the development of sports.
The award defines sports creativity as “unique experiences, creative methods, and unprecedented added value to achieve outstanding sporting performances that exceed the expected and known.”
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award ceremony will be held on January 10, 2024
