    FIBA Central Board's Thohir becomes IOC Member

    LAUSANNE (Switzerland) - FIBA Central Board member Erick Thohir on Wednesday became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

    LAUSANNE (Switzerland) - FIBA Central Board member Erick Thohir on Wednesday became a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

    Thohir, who is also President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI), joins another FIBA Central Board and Executive Committee member, Richard Carrión.

    Thohir only last month met with FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis to provide assurances that Indonesia's government and highest authorities will put all resources available for the World Cup 2023 to be a resounding success.

    Indonesia, Japan and Philippines were in December of 2017 awarded hosting rights for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

    Zagklis and FIBA President Horacio Muratore attended Wednesday's IOC Session in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the announcement about Thohir was made.

    "We at FIBA are excited and proud that Erick Thohir has become an IOC Member," Zagklis said. "Erick has shown tremendous enthusiasm on our FIBA global projects and his IOC membership underlines the importance of basketball to the Olympic Movement."

    In May, FIBA Central Board member Carrión and Secretary General Zagklis were appointed to key positions on IOC's Olympic Channel Commission.
