ABIDJAN (Cote d'Ivoire) - The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) office in Africa is set to launch its National Youth Camp - a Youth Development Program - across the continent.
Guinea and Mauritius will host the first two camps from February 8-13 with six other countries following thereafter.
The National Youth Camp aims to help national federations to identify new talents and build Youth Development Programs for local players and coaches.
According to the governing body of basketball in Africa the National Youth Camps will be run by FIBA and NBA coaching experts and each camp will gather 30 to 40 boys and girls under the age groups of 14 to 18 years old.
The event will train 25 local coaches in the first three days before it switches to the young players for the remaining of the Camps.
The FIBA National Youth Camp follows the success of the 2021 FIBA Africa Youth Camps, which visited three African cities, Nairobi (Kenya), Abidjan (Cote d'Ivoire) and Saly (Senegal).
At the end of each National Youth Camp the best players will be invited to a Regional Youth Camp, which will gather players from different parts of the continent between May and June 2022. From that session, organisers will select players for the Basketball Without Borders 2022.
After Mauritius and Guinea, the 2022 National Youth Camp edition will make stops in Mozambique (15-20 February), Uganda (21-26 February), Algeria (22-27 February) and Chad (1-6 March). National Youth Camps in DR Congo (1-6 March) and Madagascar (7-12 March) are yet to be confirmed.
The National Youth Camp will be managed by Alphonse Bile (FIBA Africa Executive Director), Jean Michel Ramaroson (President of FIBA Development Council) and Franck Traore (NBA Africa Head of Basketball Operation).
