ABIDJAN - Fifteen coaches from all corners of Africa attended the FIBA Africa Coach Instructor Course that took place from July 13-15 in the Ivorian city of Abidjan.

They came from as far Kenya, Senegal, Egypt, Morocco, Namibia, Libya, Somalia and Seychelles to improve their leadership skills from coaching experts Michael Haynes of Australia, and renowned Nelson Isley from the United States of America.

The initiative is the first step to improve the standard of coaching throughout Africa, and it's expected to visit other countries on the continent.

"The target of this course is practical. They are not standing, listening to me or Nelson [the other instructor]," Haynes said, adding: "The desire to help their athletes improve is fantastic."

"They are out showing us their ability to be instructors. As part of the FIBA Development plan, there is a number of clinics that need to be run in Africa over the next four or five months, and we hope through this course to be able to identify who can help us to deliver those courses."

"These coaches from all over Africa are very, very dedicated, and they are really getting into the activities and they are doing their very best, which is fantastic."

Pap Lemou Benga, who currently serves as FIBA Africa National Federations & Sports Manager reminded the relevance of the event.

"As part of FIBA's new coaching program, it is important for us to have coaching instructors who can instill good momentum into the promotion of the game at the national and international level," Benga noted.
