LAS VEGAS (FIBA Americas Championship 2007) – For the second time, USA will host FIBA Americas’ main competition (FIBA Americas is integrated by 44 National member Federations from all over the Americas). The first one was held in Portland, Oregon, in 1992.
This tournament is a direct ticket to two of the teams which could be representing the Americas at the 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing, China.
Another three teams (those who finish in third, fourth, and fifth place in Las Vegas) would be looking for a second shot at the Olympics in another qualifying tournament (FIBA World Pre-Olympic); only this time they will be facing teams from all over the World who couldn’t qualified in their respective Zone’s qualifying tournaments. That tournament doesn’t have a Seat yet, but it could be held in Europe a month before the Olympics.
The first Americas’ Pre-Olympic (currently known as FIBA Americas Championship) was held in Puerto Rico, in 1980. Puerto Rico also hosted the competition in 1999 and 2003. Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina hosted it in 1984, 1988, and 1995, respectively.
