SOPRON (EuroBasket Women) - The summer couldn't be any sweeter for German basketball fans.
A nation continues to celebrate Dirk Nowitzki's heroics in America, where the seven-footer led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA title at the weekend.
And now the women's national team has claimed the last spot available for the EuroBasket Women by winning the Additional Qualifying Tournament with a victory over Hungary in a two-legged Final.
After a six-point triumph in the first game in Oberhausen on Sunday, Bastian Wernthaler's team travelled to Sopron and beat Hungary 67-56 for a 17-point aggregate triumph.
Germany captain Dorothea Richter had 13 points, four assists and six rebounds and 21-year-old power forward Svenja Greunke finished with a team-high 14 points.
Now Germany, a team that finished dead last in its Division A group, will be in the Final Round and take on Spain on Saturday in Katowice where the Group C games will be played.
Also in the pool are Montenegro and hosts Poland.
"We're just happy," Wernthaler said.
"We did not expect this kind of game. Our team has a great fighting spirit.
"We don't want to be tourists in Poland."
Richter, who played at the EuroBasket in Italy four years ago, is thrilled to be going back to the tournament.
"I don't know what to say," she said.
"It's amazing! We did not expect this kind of game and we are so glad to go to Poland."
