SANTA DOMINGO - FIBA President Horacio Muratore enjoyed a hugely productive visit to the Dominican Republic where he successfully tacked a packed agenda of activities across all aspects of the sport from 18-22 February.
Extending his expertise and support to the Dominican Republic Basketball Federation (FEDOMBAL), Muratore didn’t allow a minute to be wasted alongside FEDOMBAL President, Rafael Uribe who welcomed him with the nation’s Sports Minister, Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal.
They worked together to take forward a number of initiatives, including the development of basketball in neighbouring Haiti, women’s basketball and the establishment of a University Diploma with the co-operation of FIBA, the Ministry of Sports and FEDOMBAL. Further discussions also took place with Luis Mejia Oviedo, the President of the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee.
Meanwhile there was considerable pride for President Muratore when it was revealed on a visit to the National House of Minibasket that it had been re-named in his honour. The centre is located in the main Olympic Center Sports Complex.

There was also further recognition handed to him at the first meeting of the new board of FEDOMBAL, when he was presented with a special honorary member pin badge. He also swore in the elected Directors of the Federation for the period 2016-2020.
Muratore spent plenty of time talking to those involved in the administration and technical elements of the game.
He met with referees, commissioners and table officials, as well as helping the Dominican College of Basketball Coaches (CODBAL) to schedule international accreditation courses. He also gave a speech at a conference of delegates about the new FIBA Calendar and revised governance structures.
Finally, in what truly was a 360 degree visit, Muratore spoke with commercial sponsors, the media and there was also discussion with Eduardo Najri, General Manager of the Dominican Republic men’s national teams about the changing of dates for the professional basketball league - known as the LNB, in order to adapt it to international requirements.
