Spar Citylift Girona sent out a strong statement that they are ready to challenge for this season's silverware as they completed a crushing 78-47 triumph against the short-handed Basket Landes. Brazilian center Nadia Colhado was in good form, although was quick to keep things in perspective.

She commented: "We have always played very concentrated, and match-to-match, we have to achieve important victories like this.

"But, we must not aspire to great things and a step-by-step approach must be completed."

One of the most eye-catching performances came from Swedish side Udominate who ran out 74-70 winners at Artego Bydgoszcz.

Sparta&K M.R Vidnoje were left crestfallen as they were beaten 70-60 in the Moscow derby, getting sunk by MBA.

"While we were competitive in the first quarter we played terrible in the second and third," conceded Kamilla Ogun.

"Even though our coaches warned us of MBA's fast-paced game we did not stop their fast-break. What made matters worse, was the fact that on offense, we missed too many shots. We must work on improving our game in the near future."

There was a thumbs-up for Turkish side Mersin as they won 86-59 at MBK Ruzomberok to confirm their status as one of the frontrunners.

Another Turkish side in Hatay also flexed their muscles as they strode past Sepsi Sic on the road with a commanding 80-63 success in Romania. They have some great experience in Belarus national team leader Katsiaryna Snytsina.

Elfic Fribourg got off the mark with their opening win as they took down KP Brno 72-52 and that was something to please Belgian guard, Noemie Mayombo, who highlighted the togetherness of her teammates.

On paper at least, Basket 90 Gdynia against Istanbul Universitesi looked a well-balanced contest, but the home side erupted for a spectacular 84-52 success.

Latvian center Kristine Vitola summed up the mood of a seriously fine display by the Polish side.

There was also a stellar success for another Polish side, Sleza Wroclaw as they stunned Agu Spor 72-70 in Kayseri.

"We knew that this game would be tough for us, but we made our plan for this game," said head coach, Arkadiusz Rusin.

"We wanted to play aggressive defense and I think through 35 minutes we played well, but in the last five minutes, we lost easy points a few times. We played to the finish as a team and I'm proud, so congratulations to my players," concluded the play-caller.
