SANTO DOMINGO (FIBA Americas Championship) - The Dominican Republic announced the final cut for the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship to be played from August 26 to September 6 at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The team coached by Julio Toro has the tough task to qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championship to be played in Turkey. The Dominicans don't play in a FIBA World Championship since 1978 where they finished twelfth.
Carlos Morbán and Juan Coronado are the point guards; Luis Flores and Kelvin Peña the shooting guards; Francisco García, Ricardo Greer and Franklin Western (small forwards); Charlie Villanueva, Jack Michael Martínez, Marlon Martínez (power forwards); Al Horford and Alejandro Salas are the centers.
NBA stars like Charlie Villanueva, Francisco García and Al Horford are the main attraction in possibly the best Dominican team in history.
"I am part of a strong team, we have a lot of offense and good defense, which we have to improve. I am proud of wearing the Dominican uniform and be along Al and Cisco (Garcia)," said Villanueva.
The Dominican Republic is in Group B along with Argentina, Brazil, Panama and Venezuela. Their debut is on August 26 against Brazil, winner of the Marchand Continental Championship Cup.
