SAO PAULO (FIBA Americas Championship) - Brazil have been dealt a blow in preparation for this summer's FIBA Americas Championship with news that big man Nene will not be part of the team.
According to the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB), Nene on Friday asked to be released from the national team citing personal and contractual reasons.
The FIBA Americas Championship takes place in Mar del Plata, Argentina, from 30 August to 11 September. The top two teams qualify automatically for the London Olympics.
Nene can opt out of the final year of his contract with the Denver Nuggets and become an unrestricted free agent.
If he decides to opt in, he stands to make $11 million next season.
The 28-year-old has not played for Brazil since the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship.
