PHOENIX (FIBA World Championship) - Brazil point guard Leandro Barbosa has reportedly agreed to a $32million contract extension with the Phoenix Suns.
Barbosa, who will spearhead his national side's effort at the FIBA World Championship in Japan, has according to the East Valley Tribune agreed on a five-year contract extension.
The 23-year-old would have been a free agent after the 2006-07 campaign, but Phoenix have reportedly decided to secure the services of the Brazilian, who averaged a career-high 13.1 points and shot a scorching 44% from the arc last season.
Barbosa increased his scoring average to 14.2 points in the play-offs.
He will continue his usual role as backup point guard to two-time reigning MVP Steve Nash but also could see time at shooting guard with the second unit, since the Suns added free
agent Marcus Banks this off-season.
Barbosa and Brazil are in Group C of the FIBA World Championship in Japan and tip-off their tournament on August 19 against Australia.
