AMMAN (Jordan) - Cabs Cabonilas could be one of the Philippines' top wingers in the near future after showing glimpses in the FIBA U18 Asia Cup 2024 SEABA Qualifiers.
There, the 1.93 M (6'4") hooper flexed his scoring and rebounding prowess, and those were on full display again in Gilas' dominant 75-48 victory over Indonesia to start their U18 Asia Cup campaign on Monday at the Arena Complex in As Salt.
Cabonilas had 19 points and 8 rebounds, along with a steal and a block in just three quarters. And those numbers are quite similar to what his idol does often. Wondering who that is? Find out from the youngster himself as he takes the Spotlight.
How did your basketball journey begin? What inspired you to start playing?
Cabonilas: When I was 10 years old, I started playing and learning basketball. My tito (uncle) encouraged me to join a basketball clinic. I found inspiration from others, especially my uncles, as they were the ones who pushed and supported me in my basketball pursuits.
Who have been your biggest inspirations in basketball?
Cabonilas: My biggest inspiration in every game is my family, especially my mother-my lola (grandmother). She is always there to support me. Ever since I started playing, no matter where my game was, she was always there to support and cheer me on, even when I was far away.
What is a cool or interesting fact about you that most people do not know?
Cabonilas: A fun fact about me is that I am very shy. However, when we are close, I am quite the joker.
Is there a current player that you idolize?
Cabonilas: Yes, Scottie Thompson.
How can you describe your play style? What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Cabonilas: I believe that my playing style is very simple. I focus on doing what is best for our team and following my coach's advice. My strength as a player stems from my inspirations, as they provide me with the strength I need in every game. On the other hand, my weaknesses arise when I become tired and when I don't get enough rest.
Do you have any relatives or family in basketball?
Cabonilas: Yes, my uncles and cousins are playing basketball, too.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Cabonilas: I see myself as a professional basketball player and playing in a big league, or in the PBA.
