The FIBA U18 African Championship has changed its name to FIBA U18 AfroBasket. This is the major youth competition.
The tournament brings together the 12 best national teams on the continent.
It is organized by the Africa Regional Office of the International Basketball Federation.
The U18 AfroBasket was at some point known as FIBA Africa Junior Championship
The first edition of this championship was held in 1977 in Cairo, Egypt. Egypt won the first-ever U18 continental title.
To date, reigning champion Egypt and Nigeria are the most successful countries with 6 trophies each in 22 editions. Angola follows with four titles.
This is a biennial event and is an opportunity for some of Africa’s top prospects to showcase their skills and talent.
Madagascar, host of the last edition, surprised the basketball world by upsetting some household names on the continent before settling for the second place in the Final.
This year, the competition will take place in South Africa, from August 28 to September 4, 2024.
The winner and runners-up of the FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2024 will earn the right to represent Africa at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2025 in Lausane, Switzerland.
