Mexico announces final roster for this month’s FIBA 2023 World Cup Qualifiers

MIAMI (United States) – Mexico head coach Omar Quintero has announced the 14-man roster that looks to continue the round one success they enjoyed in FIBA 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.

MIAMI (United States) – Mexico head coach Omar Quintero has announced the 14-man roster that looks to continue the round one success they enjoyed in FIBA 2023 World Cup Qualifiers.

The core of the roster remains the same as those who finished undefeated in first window play last November defeating Americas powers Puerto Rico and the United States in Chihuahua City, Mexico.

The roster has a very familiar look along with valuable opportunities for young players who have grown within the national team program like Victor Valdez who just helped Mexico to a second-place finish in the FIBA U-17 CentroBasket tournament in December.

Mexico will travel with 14-players (two more than normal) as Quintero wants the extra manpower due to the possibility of losing someone to the mandatory COVID-19 tests teams will take in order to compete.

“Without a doubt I believe in them and am sure that they will leave their heart and soul on the floor as always so that during this round of play we get the classification to the next phase that will bring us closer and closer to the final objective which is the FIBA 2023 World Cup because together nothing stops us.” Quintero said during his roster announcement press conference.

    Mexico Round 2 roster:

Orlando Mendez, Irwin Avalos, Paul Stoll, Fabian Jaimes, Moises Andriassi, Daniel Amigo, Israel Gutierrez, Gael Bonilla, Jonatan Machado, Gabriel Giron Jr, Kohl Meyer, Jose Estrada, Victor Valdes and Kelvin Jones .

Quintero and staff will welcome these players for final preparations on February 20 before beginning the next phase of play February 24 versus Cuba in Havana’s Coliseo de La Cuidad Deportiva and in Washington DC against Americas rival the United States on February 27 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena.

Seven countries are competing to advance out of 16 Americas teams to the 2023 FIBA World Cup to be held in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia.
