BEIRUT (FIBA Asia Cup 2017) - Australia were totally dominant in their first-ever foray in the FIBA Asia Cup, and at the forefront of it all was wonderful wingman Mitch Creek.
The 1.98m shooting guard from the Adelaide 36ers was the most consistently productive player for the Boomers in Beirut, averaging around 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game while also hitting 69% of his field goals.
The 25-year-old scored in double-figures in each of Australia's six wins, highlighted by a 22-points explosion in their win over Chinese Taipei to close group play. He followed that up by dropping 16 points on title contenders China in the Quarter-Finals before tallying 13 and 12 points against New Zealand and Iran respectively in the Boomers' final two assignments en route to the FIBA Asia Cup crown.
Creek was not one of the most heralded Australian players coming into the tournament, and that made his performance a lot more commendable. He was known as a very good slasher and athletic high-flyer in Australia's NBL, but hardly anyone projected him to be the national team's main man at the FIBA Asia Cup.
Things can only get better for Creek as he is expected to be among the top candidates to banner the squad in the coming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asia Qualifiers in November.
