Philippines, Mongolia go 2-0; Thailand, Hong Kong rebound in Day 2
BENGALURU (India) - The Philippines and Mongolia improved to 2-0, while Thailand and Hong Kong scored bounce-back wins in Day 2 of the FIBA U18 Women's Asian Championship Division B.
BENGALURU (India) - The Philippines and Mongolia remained perfect, while Thailand and Hong Kong entered the win column as the FIBA U18 Women's Asian Championship 2022 Division B action continued, Tuesday.
Gilas Women scored a measure of payback against Samoa, while the Mongolians took down Malaysia behind a fourth-quarter breakaway as the two now sport identical 2-0 cards to lead their respective groups.
Thailand, on the other hand, mauled Maldives by a whopping 93 points, and Hong Kong escaped Jordan in a tight encounter.

Thailand bounced back from their loss to the Philippines the night before by keeping Maldives winless through a massive 124-31 rout.
Laksamee Hewchaiyaphuim led the way once more with 21 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block in the victory that saw the victors shoot 53.6-percent from the floor thanks hugely to the eye-popping 42 assists they dished.
Priscilla Jensen finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds for a solid debut, while Nichapat Manyum chipped in 12 markers, 9 boards, and 7 assists as six players finished in double figures as Thailand improved to 1-1 in Group A.
Hong Kong rebounded as well after losing to Samoa on opening day by escaping Jordan in another low-scoring affair in the tourney, 43-41.
Cheuk Ying Lam was on the forefront with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 steals, while Wing Yiu Kong came up big on the boards once again as she hauled down 15 rebounds, together with 6 points, a steal, and a block.
Phoena Dadson, meanwhile, led the Jordanians with 9 points and 9 rebounds. She had the chance to send the game into overtime with three seconds left but her potential game-tying lay-up missed, and Kong collared the ball.
Hind Jumah had 8 points and 14 rebounds as they failed to replicate their come-from-behind 40-36 victory over Malaysia on Monday.
The Malaysians, on the other hand, remained winless after absorbing a 72-57 defeat at the hands of Mongolia in the third game of the day.
Nyamjav Nandinkhusel again led her side with a big double-double of 29 points and 11 rebounds. Bolor Erdene Battsooj had 17 points, whole Khongorzul Altanzul submitted 8 points, 15 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 blocks.
The trio spearheaded their fourth quarter pullaway. They strung together 11 straight points to erase a six-point deficit and take the lead for good on the way to remaining as the only unbeaten team in Group B with a 2-0 card.
Malaysia were led by the 15 points of Elaine Chong Hui Lin and Jia Huey Yun. Yun Enn Ng added 10 in the loss that dragged them to 0-2.
The Philippines then ended the day with a 66-59 win over Samoa, chalking up their second win in as many games to take sole leadership of Group A.
Sumayah Sugapong led Gilas Women with 28 points, including 9 in the first quarter alone as she powered their hot 19-7 start that put them ahead the rest of the way. She also had 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals.
Kristan Yumul had 16 points on 5 triples, alongside 5 rebounds. 3 assists, and a steal, motivated to beat the same nation that dashed her and the Philippines' Division A hopes in the U16 Women's Asian Championship last June.
Kira-May Filemu led Samoa with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 steals in the defeat that dropped them to 1-1. Malia Jae Ruud tallied her own double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, with an assist and a steal each.
The Samoan dribblers actually managed to trim the deficit to just four early in the final period, but Sugapong and Louna Ozar joined hands for six straight points to restore order, 62-52, with 2:32 left in the game.
